Supporting the Acceleration of New and Renewable Energy Transition, Garudafood Builds Rooftop Solar Power Plant in Sumedang

PT Garudafood Putra Putri Jaya Tbk (Garudafood) inaugurated a rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) at the Garudafood Sumedang Factory in West Java on January 18, 2024.

This 810-kilowatt peak (kWp) rooftop solar power plant is one of Garudafood's efforts to decarbonize emissions by up to 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, equivalent to planting 114,000 trees in one year.

This step also supports the government's program to accelerate the transition and mix of energy from New and Renewable Energy (EBT) and is one of the solutions to reduce climate change and global warming issues.

On this occasion, Garudafood President Director Hardianto Atmadja said that the rooftop solar panel at Garudafood Sumedang is capable of producing more than 1,200 megawatt hours (MWh), all of which is used for main activities and to support the production process.

“Amidst the ever-evolving business dynamics, we are committed to implementing integrated sustainability practices in the company's operational activities,” said Hardianto Atmadja, as quoted from an official release (18/1/2024).

He further explained that the company is striving to reduce its carbon footprint and other negative environmental impacts caused by conventional energy sources by adopting environmentally friendly technologies and innovations.

Hardianto Atmadja also revealed that Garudafood optimizes the use of resources, manages production waste, and implements circular economy practices.

“Not only that, we are also committed to supporting the communities around our operational areas by making positive contributions through social programs and sustainable partnerships,” said Hardianto Atmadja.

The inauguration of the rooftop solar power plant was marked by the pressing of a videotron screen by Hardianto Atmadja, President Director of Garudafood, accompanied by Garudafood Directors Fransiskus Johny Soegiarto and Basuki Nur Rohman, as well as Telly Steven Saidito, Business Unit Head of Garudafood Sumedang.

Additionally, Audwin Purwadi, CEO of PT Aruna Cahaya Pratama (Aruna), the developer of the solar power plant, was also present.

“We are proud of the synergy with Garudafood in the installation of this rooftop solar power plant. For us, this partnership is a step towards a shared vision of creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly business environment,” said Audwin Purwadi. “We believe that solar power technology will bring significant benefits in energy management and operational efficiency,” concluded Audwin Purwadi.

Sustainable lifestyle The inauguration of the solar power plant was followed by a talk show entitled “Sustainable Lifestyle” which explored three different perspectives: industry, academia, and the younger generation. The industrial perspective was presented by Basuki Nur Rohman, Director of Garudafood; Prof. Tri Basuki Joewono, Rector of Parahyangan Catholic University in Bandung, from the academic perspective; and Prilly Latuconsina from the younger generation perspective.

“Parahyangan Catholic University, as an educational institution, always strives to integrate the principles of sustainability into its academic life,” said Prof. Tri Basuki.

“Unpar continues to encourage the entire academic community and society to keep innovating in creating a healthier, more comfortable, and safer earth for us and future generations,” he added.

Prof. Tri Basuki Joewono also emphasized that his party continues to encourage sustainable living patterns to be part of the academic process on campus.

Throughout 2024, Garudafood plans to penetrate rooftop solar power plant installations throughout Garudafood's operational areas, namely Pati in Central Java, Gresik in East Java, and its headquarters in Jakarta.

Thus, the optimization of the potential solar energy generated from all solar power plants at Garudafood

is estimated to reach a total of more than 2,400 kWP, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions of 3,000 tons of CO2 annually.
